How to build a Dental Practice that can run WITHOUT you
The ultimate practice owner dream is to have a dental practice that can run without you, while you are able to do the things you love!
For some dentists, that means getting to do more dentistry, for others it means creating more ideas and businesses and working on them. Or for some it means getting time back in your personal lives for family, travel or simply rest! Whatever reason it may be for, let’s talk about turning that into a reality for you too! The key pieces necessary to build a thriving dental practice that can run with, or without you there can be simple in theory and take some work to get dialed in. Let’s chat a few of them.
You will need:
- Eyes on your profitability - which starts with in office collections (and really production if we want to get super dialed in on it)
- Culture that works!
- HR and team management that follows your desired outcomes
- Contingency plans for common and even uncommon but potentially likely events
- Trustworthy and trained people to carry out what you need done
First steps in creating this reality and pushing forward on the list of to-do’s is to really get to know your business and dial in what you want the outcomes of your business to be. What do you expect everything to look like? Do you want high profitability and a busy schedule? Does “busy” mean successful? What does success look like for you? … define that! Do you want a team that runs with a high focus on patient experience AND profitability? What do you want your culture to look like, how should your team members act when you’re there and when you’re gone?
When you dial in your desires it’s easier for your team to see how they can win. With a team that understands what the end goals are, you have a team that makes decisions that are best for the practice, the team and your patients, without consulting you because it hits the target! Doesn’t that sound amazing?
3 Steps to Empowering a Goal-Driven, Self-Sufficient Team:
1. Get to work on your ultimate goal and success definition.
2. Build goals and “work” that fosters the culture you desire, your culture will foster your definition of success!
3. TRUST the team you’ve trained. When they’re “there”, you trust them and empower them to do their thing. You support their decisions and when the choices don’t totally align with what you would have done, if it’s something that you fully feel like should have gone differently, have a training conversation with the team member(s).
It can be that “easy” with the right parts in play. So, what do you want? How do you want this business to look at the end of it all?
