0:00:51.5 KD: Hello, Dental A Team listeners, this is Kiera. And you guys, I just came back from an epic, epic event. I was at Tony Robbins’ private studio doing an incredible event, completely changed my life. And, ironically, when I was there, I was speaking with one of the platinum members and he said, “Kiera, something that completely changed my life was this phrase called ‘Egoscue’,” and I literally looked at him and said, “What the heck is that?”

0:01:17.0 Brian Bradley: God bless you.

0:01:18.0 KD: And he told me… [chuckle] He told me that it was a different form of healing and utilizing your body in a very different way. Ironically, he actually had a shoulder impingement. Well, as you guys know, I have been complaining about shoulder pain, about knee and hip pain. So, of course, I went in, talked to them, and I’m so jazzed to bring on Brian Bradley. He is the Vice President of Egoscue, and he has actually been able to help me. Guys, when I was at the event, I was all taped up, and now I am not taped and not having any pain. So I’m super excited.

0:01:49.2 KD: When I talked to Brian, I said, “Brian, you have to get on the podcast. I’ve got hundreds of dentists and team members who are experiencing pain. And I have tried PRP, I’ve tried injections, I’ve tried physical therapy, I’ve tried dry needling, like literally everything,” and Brian’s like, “I know, I know.” So I’m so jazzed to welcome Brian Bradley to the show. Brian, how are you today?

0:02:08.0 BB: Great. Thank you so much for this opportunity. What I really like about this is normal podcasts that I do all have the video running too, and this is just audio. I just wanted your listeners to know that I have the perfect face for radio, so let’s just keep this going.

0:02:21.0 KD: Exactly, I know. I totally threw him for a loop when I said, “No, Brian, it’s just all audio.” We are recording it, guys. But I really wanted him to pop on the podcast today and to share about what Egoscue even is, and I really, really, really… I was… We pushed Brian to the top of the list. We have quite a few guests on here. But I just wanted to get him on here because I feel like so many doctors that I’m working with, so many different team members just have chronic pain, and so to find something for myself… And I haven’t even tried it, guys, ’cause I literally got COVID. Yep, I’m gonna put it out there. I was at the event, got COVID after I saw Brian. Brian escaped the COVID. We were all there, so many of us walked away with it. So I haven’t even done half of the exercises that I should be doing, but already I’m not taped, I’m not having the pain, my shoulder’s moving more freely, and I literally went to Brian the next day, and I’m like, “Brian, my body is so sore from actually working in the way it’s supposed to be working.” So, just excited.

0:03:19.9 KD: So, Brian, just give a quick background of Egoscue. I know you work with the Seattle Study Club, I know you do work with a lot of dentists with Egoscue seeing a lot of great results. So kind of just even tell us what the heck even is Egoscue? It’s the weirdest word. I didn’t even know what the heck this was.

0:03:33.8 BB: Yes, so that’s why I said “God bless you,” ’cause it sounds like you’re sneezing. [chuckle] Listen, I ran into Pete Egoscue, so that’s where the name comes from, 30 years ago, this December 10th that just went by was 30 years for me.

0:03:47.0 KD: Crazy.

0:03:47.9 BB: Some people work in 50 jobs their whole life. I’ve had one and it turned into literally a life’s calling because when you see what Pete did outside of Vietnam, his whole injury came during the Vietnam War, AK-47s and shrapnel from grenades top all through his left leg, and finally, after two years of searching, you know how it is when you’re in chronic pain, you’re searching, if everybody… Those of you that have pain out there, you think back to yourself, just close your eyes and picture how much you’ve done to try to get yourself out of these symptoms. It’s like having a naughty teenager, “When are they just gonna go away?” [chuckle] just nagging 14-year-olds. And let me just state that no 14-year-olds were hurt during this podcast [chuckle] except their feelings.

0:04:31.6 BB: Looking at this, Pete Egoscue figured it out because he didn’t have the blinders on coming out of medical school. When I ran into him, I had just come out of college, I knew everything when that was all based on significance ’cause basically I had zero experience, I was just book-smart, video-smart, test-smart. And honestly, I wasn’t even that smart. When I ran into a guy like this with a political science degree who had to fix himself and then created a method in 1971 coming out of Vietnam that when he finally said, “I’m done chasing symptoms. What is wrong? What is my body trying to tell me?” So instead of saying that whole thing of, “What’s wrong? I’m broken,” he changed it to, “What if my body’s just giving me signals?”

0:05:15.9 BB: So for you, right shoulders or… Shoulder symptoms and they were out of position and all this stuff, and I’m telling you, look, your shoulder’s so far out of position, I’m stoked. Because if it was in the right position, then I’d be guessing at what was going on with you, but because that glenohumeral joint is so rounded forward without you having to think about it, it just… It set itself up there, it’s our job to figure out how to get it to position. Just by you pulling your shoulder blades back doesn’t do anything because that’s a peripheral change.

0:05:46.3 BB: I need this to happen at the structural level, getting your mid-back, your thoracic spine, like the bra line and three inches higher and lower, to reposition itself so that the shoulder blade can drop into place rather than being squeezed into place. So for those of you that are out there busting your butt on the Peloton and working out, and I know we’re talking about this to work into 2022, we’re all ready to start working out harder instead of smarter.

0:06:12.4 BB: Listening to this, I hope… My hope is, my belief is that you’ll come out of this with a belief system, not a hope, that your body won’t fail you and it’ll produce for you. Let’s change it to belief which is, my body is serving me when I give it the right alignment. That is number one, number one. So a chiropractor has the right line of thinking, but wouldn’t it be nice if you could make your chiropractor’s job easier and if you could actually avoid having to go see them instead of wanting to go see them? For those of you in chronic pain if you think about this, there’s always an inception. Like I blow out my left knee twice downhill mountain biking. When you tear your ACL, you have [0:06:56.5] ____ off the bone, you have a six-inch blood clot, you do all this stuff, you tear your labrum in your hip, separate the shoulder, dislocate the shoulder, herniated disc, all that stuff, those are all opportunities for me to get better as a therapist, and it worked.

0:07:10.1 BB: And so for you, I remember you said you’ve been taped up for like four days, I’m like, “Wow, does this girl even shower? What’s going on?” [0:07:16.2] ____, but we all know [0:07:18.8] ____ Kiera, she showers.

0:07:20.3 KD: I do.

0:07:21.6 BB: But she has [0:07:22.7] ____ because when you get that RockTape or kines tape put on there, it’s to facilitate the nervous system to hold your body in the right place, but even your shoulder was still sitting out of the right position. So why don’t we make the tape’s job a little bit easier? If the tape had a life, it would say, “Sister, you’re stressing me,” versus, “Wow, your body’s really helping me do my job.” And that goes to healthcare professional out there. The analogy is this, ’cause we’re talking to dentists and staff, I brush and floss my teeth because I wanna make the dentist job easier. It’s that simple. If I went to see the dentist, he or she did the work, and all I did was come home and eat Milk Duds, which by the way are freaking amazing, you guys know that…

0:08:07.2 KD: They are so good. They’re dangerous, man, those Milk Duds.

0:08:11.2 BB: They are not good for crowns, but they’re good for business. So keep [0:08:14.2] ____ eating Milk Duds, tell your patients. But you think about this, if I didn’t brush and floss, then I’m not serving myself, I’m always reliant on somebody else versus brush and floss my joints, my muscles, my tendons, and we’ll make sure by the end of this that everybody has access to a URL that you can go to where we might be able to get in there and take a look at you guys. I’ll make sure you have my Instagram so you can go on there, take a look at some of the stuff we have on there. But I wanna make sure that everybody listening here, if you’re not going to something like the Seattle Study Club annual event, which I’ll be speaking out in January, if you’re not going to something like that, we still wanna take a look at you.

0:08:51.6 KD: And I think Brian, to your point, ’cause when I saw you, it was ironic, I had a shirt on that had a stripe down my arm, and you took pictures of me on either side and my right side was aligned, the stripe down my arm went straight in alignment, and the one on my left arm, which is the one that I’ve had pain on, was completely curved forward. That line didn’t even come down from my ear, it was almost from my chin, like so far rounded forward. And so to be able to see that, it was very easy for you. And what I thought was interesting that I’ve never done before, which is why I was like, “Brian, we gotta get you on the podcast, I want people to hear about this,” was you did a full treatment on me when I was there, and it was just laying on my back. I literally have my feet up on a chair, bent in a position, and then just laying there for 15 minutes looking up at the ceiling, crazy, very simple. And that’s what I loved is I have… I’ve had physical trainers, I have had PT, I have done…

0:09:53.7 KD: You name it. I have so many resistant bands and I am doing crabs and so many things to fix my knee, my hip, and it was interesting ’cause you notice it actually isn’t my right hip where I’ve got symptoms, it’s my left hip that actually is not working. And since we’ve identified that, noticing how weak my left side actually is, my right side has been over-working, and that’s causing a lot of this chronic pain. And so that’s something that I was just very, very fascinated by. So Brian, what is the methodology behind it? Is it that you guys take the symptoms that we have, then look at our skeletal structure and start to put it all together, and then developing… Like I said, you guys use a lot of just body weight. It’s not weight, it’s not resistance bands. It’s literally like, I laid on the ground, I remember you said like, “Kiera, get your shoulder blades to glide back and forth.” And my poor left shoulder blade didn’t even remember how it was supposed to glide. It had been so far out of position for so long, they’re like, just that alone, I thought you were a drill master on me like trying to just get my shoulder blade to glide back and forth versus doing what I’d been doing for so many years. So kinda walk us through, how does this even work? ‘Cause I know a lot of people are in chronic pain and just have felt like there are no other solutions.

0:11:04.4 BB: Well, think about… Let’s run everybody through something real quick. So if those of you that are driving, keep driving, do not do this. But those of you that are not driving… Kiera, do you mind running through this real quick?

0:11:16.3 KD: I’m ready.

0:11:16.4 BB: So I want you to stand up.

0:11:18.0 KD: Okay.

0:11:18.8 BB: Everybody just stand up, take your shoes off, and I want you to just relax there and just close your eyes. Now, I know you have a microphone in your hand and all that, but let’s say everybody else.

0:11:26.9 KD: Okay.

0:11:27.1 BB: Close your eyes and think about where your body weight is from left to right. Which foot is carrying most of your body weight?

0:11:32.7 KD: Right.

0:11:34.8 BB: Kiera, that’s the side that hurts.

[chuckle]

0:11:38.3 KD: I know.

0:11:39.4 BB: This is where we start with a very simple test just to say, there’s gotta be a reason why she’s overloading right, avoiding left, which then can create cross pattern mechanisms. Remember, we walk with the left arm coming forward and the right leg coming forward and the opposite are going back and back, and then it switches as you move, you cross-pattern walk while your body cross pattern stabilizes. And in the PT world, they would say, “Oh, you have Upper-Crossed syndrome, Lower-Crossed syndrome, all this stuff,” which came from the Vladimir Janda world over in the Czech Republic, who by the way, he was recovering from post-polio syndrome, and he was a client of mine for three years, and really understood what the method was all about. So when you feel an imbalance from your left to right, just that alone is an awareness to bring to your attention for those of you doing this.

0:12:26.2 BB: But always ask, why is it like that? And then look down at your feet. Do you see a bunion forming on one big toe versus the other? “Hey, I’m just curious, wonder why that’s there.” Well, my mom had bunions, and then we blame it on genetics, but I’d love to see the genetic code for bunions ’cause there isn’t one. So [0:12:43.0] ____ walking pattern that’s off-balance from left to right, and the Egoscue method is all about tying the ankles, the knees, the hips and the shoulders and the alignment of the head together as a unit, so that every time that you reach into the cover to pull out a… In the refrigerator, you’re pulling out a thing of orange juice and you pull it out with your right arm, that right arm has to be stabilized at the spine in the upper back, that upper back has to be stabilized at the low spine, and then that has to be stabilized by one or both of your hips, whichever one you’re choosing. So let me give an example. A lot of people are trying to exercise. And let’s just use downward dog as an exercise.

0:13:21.6 BB: Downward dog is done in yoga, it’s the piped up position like an upside-down V, and the words I would use with people are push versus pull. And I get so many people doing downward dog that say “My shoulders are killing me.” Well, yeah, because you’re pushing into the down dog instead of relax your shoulders, let your hands be the stabilizer, and now tilt your pelvis so your butt is sticking out and pull yourself back from the hips and abs area. And it’s a completely different movement. It’s a completely different movement. So all we did with you was put your body in an advantageous position to allow gravity to do the work on your upper back, which then allowed your shoulder blade to glide back to a better position, took 10% of the stress off the shoulder. I’m guessing at the percentage, right?

0:14:05.6 KD: Mm-hmm.

0:14:06.0 BB: Well let’s say it’s 10% times 30 days, times 60 days, times 90 days. All of a sudden it’s like, hey, we’ve been gone from each other for two weeks, three weeks, and we’re going, “Why do I feel so much better already?” Because remember, during Covid, we’ve spent so much time sitting in a chair, guys, and I’m holding my hand up like a person rounded over slumped in a chair, and then we stand up slumped and then we get on a Peloton or something like that, nothing against Peloton, I love it, but you get on the Peloton in that slumped over position and you wonder why not only are you hurting, but you’re not losing “weight” and toning up the way you would like to because your body is fighting itself.

0:14:45.6 KD: Yeah.

0:14:45.7 BB: Let’s get you out of the fight position and into a better alignment position so that you can take flight and literally do whatever you want, pain-free, give me the gains that I’m looking for, and that’s what Egoscue is all about.

0:15:01.1 KD: Are you guys sick of trying to figure it out on your own? I know I am. When I’m trying to run a business, sometimes I just think there’s got to be a better way to do this. And so for me, my answer has been to find someone who’s done it and does it really, really, really well. I’m talking the best of the best of the best. I want someone who’s been in my shoes, somebody who understands what I’m going through. When I was looking for the consulting business, I found a coach who literally has run a consulting business. 0:16:21.2 KD: And I thought, Brian, something that was really interesting that I loved when I was in person with you was that you had a picture of your son at the… I think he’s at the pool. And your son’s back was ripped, like I’m talking muscle definition, and he’s with similar aged kids around him, and you said he doesn’t work out, he just goes and plays at the park and utilizes his body the way it’s supposed to be used. That’s Egoscue. And so for me, that’s why I was so excited and so grateful that you were willing to pop on the podcast, because to me, this is something that just logically makes sense, like instead of trying so hard, like why don’t I just get my body back into alignment so it’s working the way that it was intended to, I mean we have beautiful bodies that are built to function properly, but I think due to our modern world that we live in, we’ve actually trained our bodies to not work the way that they were designed to do so.

0:17:16.1 KD: I remember you also said, it was me and another gentleman, he was, gosh, I don’t know, probably not quite double my age, but he was definitely getting up there, and I remember you said, “Kiera, if I was recruiting for a soccer team, would I choose you or would I choose him?” So he’s probably a good 20-ish years older than I was, and we both said that you would choose me ’cause I’m younger, and you actually said “No, I would choose him, because when he was growing up, he was actively playing outside, he’s working, shoveling snow, not hiring that out, utilizing his body the way it was meant to be used versus us in the 21st century, utilizing phones, hiring things out. We’ve modernized so much that I think we’re actually doing a disservice to our bodies.” What are your thoughts around that?

0:18:01.5 BB: 100% in the sense that we’ve gone from… It’s just like the Marine Corps, for example, the Marine Corps had to lower standards because the kids coming in couldn’t pass the standards a while ago.

0:18:12.2 KD: Interesting.

0:18:12.9 BB: They finally got back to a point where they’re not apologizing. They moved the standards back up and said, “You wanna be here, become the elite.” So when we start playing around with that kind of stuff because the population is changing, then we’re accommodating ourselves into, number one, the fattest country in the world, number one, the US…

0:18:29.2 KD: Mm-hmm.

0:18:31.0 BB: Most, and we work out the most. How is that even possible? Which is what, when you think about it, the older person, older, I’m 53, so let’s put that guy around 60, right? We look at a guy who’s 60 versus a young lady that’s around 30, you’re looking at it saying, “Which one would I choose?” Well, of course, the younger person might be able to run longer, they think. It’s just not true. The older person, the wiser person, doesn’t waste energy going in certain directions. That’s the psychological part. But the physical is, this guy was running, jumping, climbing, hopping, crawling, raking leaves, than jumping into a six-foot pile of leaves when he was younger, because we used to play for a function. Versus now, we get in the car and we go to the gym and we do core exercises and we want to know if our body is “failing us” or working against us, or what’s our body doing to us? Versus your body is serving you, your body is working for you, we just have to change your mind that you’re not broken, you’re just bent, let’s give you a little bit of stimulus to move you back. For you, I use the floor to get it done. For him, I may have used some standing stuff to get it done. And we had about what? Six, 7000 people total on virtual and in-person in the event you were at, and I have to be able to give them exercises that don’t require them to lie on the floor and do that kind of stuff, kind of like what we’re doing with people here.

0:19:49.5 BB: Where we would say, where is your balance left to right? Well, I’m not really sure. That could mean you’re not really in touch with your kinesthetic awareness, no big deal. We’ll strengthen that as your body gets stronger over time. So listen, my son, the picture you saw of him and then the sprinting thing that he did, the 200 and he won by 45 meters in his first 200-meter sprint, it’s because you’re up bigger, faster, stronger, because I took him to the park three and four times a week for two hours at a time, and he would come up and say, “Are we ready to leave?” And I’m like, “Do you want to?” And he’s like, “No.” And I’m like, “Okay. Well, let’s keep playing. You keep playing”. And if there were no kids at the park, then I would get in there with him to swing on the swing, to climb on the sliding board, to climb up the sliding board backward, to go all those kind of things that we did as kids, where we’re losing that. So I implore you. Those of you with kids, get your kid crawling as much as possible with kids that are from zero to two years old, whatever. My kid ended up walking around 15 months, he attempted to walk at 12, I knocked him back over and started playing on the floor. Now, don’t call CPS, I’m usually not.

[chuckle]

0:20:54.2 BB: But I put him on the floor and played with him and he never wanted to stand up again until we reached 15 months and then it was free rein. And he had three more months of developing his cross-patterning nervous system, muscular response, bone alignment, and I just gave him an unfair advantage from year one. Now he’s playing D1 soccer, runs a 4-4, has a very strong left leg and can kick with his right leg, so you create these athletes. If they have some genetic ability, and I know it’s not me for sure. But they have a genetic ability, so you look at this and create these imbalances. For all my pro-golfers from Nicklaus Player, Palmer Trevino, Greg Norman, to Tiger Woods, to Mickelson, all these guys, we tell them, “Look, go very simple. If you’re hitting at the range, put your feet together and hit 10 balls like that, that will cause your hips to rotate and switch clubs. Get… Put a left hand or club in your hand if you’re a right and hit three balls every 10 balls you hit right-handed.” Just to give your body a cross pattern reference. Imagine you guys in the dental world, brushing your teeth with your left hand if you’re right-handed.

0:22:00.3 KD: It’s very bizarre.

0:22:01.4 BB: Think about it.

[chuckle]

0:22:02.5 BB: It’s weird. But it does create a different line of thinking. You may not clean your teeth as well, but that’s your problem, not mine. I’m not in the dental world. But it does create something with your left arm that you would normally do with your right. So start paying attention. When you cross your right leg over, “Wow, I’ve been sitting here for 30 minutes with my right leg crossed over, I might wanna cross my left leg over for a minute just to give my SI joint and my femoral head a different response rather than always choosing the same side.

0:22:32.4 KD: Interesting. I love it Brian and I love what you guys do so much because the people who’ve been on the podcast with me know for the last two years… I mean, we’re talking… I love to travel. That was one of the number one reasons I built the business, is to travel, to serve dental practices and now traveling has become hard, needing to find different positions, I can’t bend my knee, I can’t move my hip, waking me up in the middle of the night and I’m like, “Shoot, I’m 35. This is getting ridiculous.” And so finding a solution that my arm has not… Yes. And I’m very early on the process. But just even noticing that my arm is moving in different ways and very simple exercises, it’s not hard, it’s not something that I’m like… It’s much less work than I’ve ever had to do for a workout program, and so I really just want people to have just information and resources and know that there might be alternative options. So Brian, you mentioned that you’re gonna have a URL. If people are interested, for me, like I came and saw you, you did an assessment on me to see if I was even a right candidate, if Egoscue could help me, I’m super thrilled with what I’ve already been having happened, super excited to meet Kathy, I haven’t met her yet due to the COVID, so I’m excited to meet her here locally.

0:23:45.5 BB: She’s great.

0:23:46.8 KD: But just having opportunities, so if people are interested, they wanna find out more, see if they’re even a candidate for Egoscue, see if you could even get rid of pain, I even saw a dentist at the event, that’s why I was like, “Brian, we have to talk about this”. So many dentists and dental team members could definitely benefit. What’s kind of like next steps? How do they even find out if they’re a candidate for Egoscue?

0:24:03.9 BB: Well, I’m gonna give you that in a second, but I’m gonna read you something. But prior to this, think about it from a dentistry standpoint. It’s almost like Good Will Hunting at the end where Robin Williams looks at him and says, “It’s not your fault.” I wanna say that to all of you in the dental world. It’s not your fault. Okay, now we all start to tear up, it’s really not your fault. But it’s not your fault because you’ve chosen a healthcare field that requires you to work from one side of the body versus the other. It’s like wanting my brother-in-law do lung cancer extraction and heart transplant surgery, which I’ve seen many times with him, and he works from one side of the body, has his head in a sculpt and you’re looking at this kind of stuff going, “No wonder his posture is so compromised by serving others.” So let us help you, help other people. I mean, that’s exactly where we’re going with this kind of stuff. So what I’m gonna do is I’m gonna give you a URL, and I’ll spell it out so people aren’t guessing, where they can go and get some exercises that we’ll put two or three exercises up there for them to try out, and we’ll also have some ideas for them to connect with us. Healthcare starts with personal responsibility. Now, we don’t have a lot of room on our plates for more responsibility. But what I will tell you, when you decide to commit to yourself, and we’re going into 2022. When you decide to really commit to yourself, let us help you make it easier versus, “My body failed me, and here I am in the end of 2022, and my body is right where it was at 2021 and so is my pain, and so as my mind and so is my heart.”

I was so grateful because like you said, I have tried so many things, I’ve tried alternative medicine, I’ve tried… I’ve had MRIs and just to feel like… I’ve literally gotten to a spot where I’m like, I guess this is what it is. I guess that I’ve hit my middle of my life and I guess my body just deteriorates from now. And so to have other options into… Not being pain, I’m not taped up, like we took the tape off and I haven’t taped since then, and to feel like my body… No, I don’t think it’s perfectly healed yet, but I do feel much… I feel a lot of hope. And within that first time of seeing you, even just that one exercise alone gave me massive relief already. And so just having an opportunity for other people who have tried everything, I’m definitely recommending. I literally walked into Brian the next day and said, “Brian, I have to get you on the podcast.” There are hundreds of thousands of people who need to experience this, who need to have help, who need to have hope, so if you’re one of those people…
